Starting with isolated technique practice, to encourage efficient passing with both feet, Eric also works with the goalkeepers on the principles of close distance shot stopping, including the smother technique.

Eric then invites the goalkeepers into a 3x mini goal game, which allows the goalkeepers to implement their learnings into a match realistic environment, with pressure from attackers when closing down the back pass, before progressing the session on for the Goalkeeper to defend the goal and defend the space, depending on the service.

This session can be adapted and progressed to benefit goalkeepers of all ages and ability levels.

Working both with and without pressure, Eric’s session allows the young goalkeepers to grow in confidence and build on their decision making skills, based on the individual scenario they are faced with.

Eric also discusses the ‘what if’ possibilities with the goalkeepers and transition them into a shot stopping exercise with recovery movements.

CROSSING SESSION, PRE-INTEGRATION WITH OUTFIELD

When planning with your head coach the intended outcomes for the squad session, it’s important that we design a session to prepare our goalkeeper to be successful as they progress from isolation practice with the goalkeeper coach, into the full squad training.

In this session Eric Steele showcases a session he uses to prepare the goalkeeper for a full squad session, designed around deliveries from wide areas. Within this functional practice, Eric focuses on brave positioning when facing crosses, as well as the technique on catching or punching.

In part 2 of this session, Eric delivers an integrated practice with the outfield players, which the goalkeepers have been prepared for within their isolated training practice.
